ESPN: WKF Partners with UNFPA & KIF to Empower Women Against Gender-Based Violence

In a groundbreaking alliance, the World Karate Federation (WKF), the Koyamada International Foundation (KIF), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have launched the Guardian Girls Global Karate Project, a transformative initiative aimed at empowering women and combating gender-based violence (GBV) through the art of karate.

This innovative project seeks to equip girls and young women with self-defense skills, fostering confidence and resilience to confront and prevent various forms of violence. By integrating karate training into GBV prevention strategies, the initiative leverages the discipline, respect, and mental fortitude inherent in martial arts to address and reduce instances of violence against women.

The collaboration was officially inaugurated with a signing ceremony on October 7th and 8th, 2022, at KIF’s global headquarters in Los Angeles. The event marked the beginning of a series of self-defense seminars and demonstrations to be conducted alongside WKF’s Karate 1-Premier League events worldwide. These sessions aim to showcase karate’s practical applications in self-defense and its potential as a powerful tool in the fight against GBV.

A notable milestone in the project’s rollout occurred on January 28th and 29th, 2023, in Cairo, Egypt. The Guardian Girls Global Karate Project hosted seminars where participants learned practical tools to confront violent situations. The events featured esteemed karatekas, including Amy Connell of Scotland, a two-time European Championships medalist and Commonwealth champion, and Giana Farouk of Egypt, a two-time World Champion and Olympic Games medalist. Their expertise provided participants with invaluable insights into self-defense techniques and personal empowerment.

The Cairo launch garnered significant attention, with dignitaries such as Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy; UNFPA Representative in Egypt, Frederika Meijer; the Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, Oka Hiroshi; WKF President, Antonio Espinós; KIF Co-Founder and President, Nia Lyte; and President of the Egyptian Karate Federation, Mohamed Al Dahrawy, in attendance. Their presence underscored the global commitment to addressing GBV through collaborative and innovative approaches.

The Guardian Girls Global Karate Project exemplifies how sports can transcend physical activity to become a catalyst for social change. By empowering women with self-defense skills and fostering a supportive community, this initiative aims to create a safer environment where women can thrive free from the threat of violence.
