In a key move that demonstrates Texas Tech’s commitment to improving its football program through strategic Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives, the Red Raiders have acquired a commitment from Lloyd Jones III, a four-star quarterback from Hitchcock High School in Texas. Jones, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 210 pounds, is listed as the nation’s No. 248 overall talent and No. 17 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class.

Jones’ high school experience has been nothing short of miraculous. He accumulated nearly 8,000 passing yards and 1,600 rushing yards, resulting in 136 total touchdowns. His dual-threat abilities were instrumental in leading Hitchcock to a state championship, establishing him as one of Texas’ top high school quarterbacks.

The Red Raiders’ success in acquiring Jones demonstrates their proactive approach to the changing landscape of college athletics, particularly in terms of NIL chances. In recent years, Texas Tech has been at the forefront of using NIL to attract and retain great people. Specifically, in 2022, the Matador Club, a group of Texas Tech alumni, revealed plans to sign 100 football players to one-year, $25,000 NIL contracts. These agreements not only provided financial assistance, but also encouraged players to participate in community service and charitable activities in the Lubbock region.

Furthermore, in 2024, Patrick Mahomes II, a Texas Tech alumnus and NFL standout, launched “Team Mahomes,” signing six student-athletes to NIL contracts with Adidas. This program included athletes from a variety of sports, including football, and demonstrated the university’s commitment to supporting its athletes through innovative NIL collaborations.

The commitment of Lloyd Jones III demonstrates Texas Tech’s excellent use of NIL funding to attract top-tier talent. By creating an environment that encourages athletes both on and off the pitch, the Red Raiders are establishing themselves as a strong force in collegiate athletics. As Jones prepares to bring his championship legacy to Lubbock, fans and experts will be watching to see how his acquisition affects the team’s chances in the following seasons.
