In a surprising turn of events, four-star wide receiver Daylan McCutcheon has decommitted from Florida State University (FSU) and committed to the University of Texas Longhorns. This decision marks the fourth ESPN 300 departure from FSU’s 2025 recruiting class since the start of the regular season.
McCutcheon, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound receiver from Lovejoy High School in Lucas, Texas, had been committed to FSU since July 13. During his junior season, he recorded impressive stats with 92 receptions for 1,430 yards and 20 touchdowns. His performance on the field, combined with a 3.96 GPA, made him a highly sought-after recruit.
Prior to his decommitment, McCutcheon was the second-highest-ranked member of FSU’s 2025 recruiting class, trailing only five-star offensive tackle Solomon Thomas. His departure is a significant blow to the Seminoles, who have faced challenges in retaining top talent amid a disappointing 1-5 start to the 2024 season. In recent months, FSU has also lost commitments from four-star defenders Javion Hilson and Myron Charles, as well as wide receiver Malik Clark.
McCutcheon’s decision to join the Texas Longhorns adds to an already impressive 2025 recruiting class for head coach Steve Sarkisian. With his commitment, Texas now boasts 13 ESPN 300 prospects, including three of ESPN’s top-15 wide receivers in the current cycle. McCutcheon joins fellow four-star wide receivers Jaime Ffrench and Kaliq Lockett, further strengthening the Longhorns’ offensive arsenal.
The flip also highlights Texas’s aggressive recruiting strategy, particularly in securing top-tier talent from within the state. McCutcheon, being a Texas native, emphasized the sentiment of staying close to home in his decision, stating, “There’s no place like home.”
For FSU, McCutcheon’s departure underscores the challenges the program faces in maintaining its recruiting momentum amid on-field struggles and coaching staff changes. The Seminoles will need to redouble their efforts to stabilize their recruiting class and address the factors contributing to these decommitments.
As the recruiting landscape continues to evolve, McCutcheon’s decision serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of college football commitments. Programs must remain vigilant and adaptable to retain top talent and build for future success.
