Lindsey Vonn’s Epochal Open Letter to the Skiing Community
To my fellow alpine skiers, ski fans, and the entire ski community,
As I think on my path in the sport I love, my heart is filled with appreciation. Skiing has been more than a sport to me; it has been my passion, purpose, and best teacher. Today, I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported me, cheered for me, and helped define my career in ways I never imagined.
I knew I’d found something unique the moment I clicked into my skis. The mountains became my second home, and the slopes my shelter. But what actually made my trip unique was the community that surrounding me—my fellow athletes who pushed me to be better, the dedicated coaches who believed in me, and, of course, the great fans who never stopped applauding, even during my most difficult moments.
Skiing is about more than simply speed and records; it’s also about grit, perseverance, and heart. I endured hurdles during my career, including injuries, setbacks, and times of doubt. But each time I fell, your steadfast support helped me get back up. You told me that defeats are merely preparation for comebacks, so I never gave up.
Thank you, my fellow skiers, for motivating me every day. The next generation of competitors continues to astound me, and I am glad to watch the sport evolve, with new talent emerging to push the boundaries even further. I am honoured to have been a part of this great community, and I will always be here to help those who aspire to carve their own path down the mountains.
My fans’ support and encouragement have meant the world to me. Whether you watched my races, wrote letters of encouragement, or simply believed in me, please know that your kindness has had a long-term impact on my life. You are the reason I fought to get stronger after each fall. You are the reason why I never skied alone, no matter where I was in the globe.
Skiing will always hold a special place in my heart as I embark on the next phase of my life. I may not be racing anymore, but my love for the sport remains strong. I wish to continue giving back to the community that has given me so much—to inspire, teach, and pass on the things I’ve learnt along the road.
