2032: WKF Intensifies Efforts to Bring Karate Back to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics… see details

In a determined effort to reinstate karate into the Olympic program, the World Karate Federation (WKF) has intensified its campaign for inclusion in the 2032 Brisbane Games. This initiative follows the sport’s debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and its subsequent exclusion from Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

In February 2025, WKF representatives engaged in a pivotal meeting with the Brisbane 2032 Organizing Committee, including CEO Cindy Hook and Director of Sports Brendan Keane. The discussions centered on showcasing karate’s global impact and exploring its potential contribution to the success and legacy of the Brisbane Games. Notably, Australia boasts a robust karate community, with nearly 200,000 practitioners annually, and the sport has been integrated into school programs to promote well-being and resilience among students.

Despite its successful debut in Tokyo, where karate achieved a net reach of 48.4 million spectators across 19 markets, the sport faced exclusion from subsequent Olympic programs. This decision has been met with widespread confusion and disappointment within the global karate community. WKF President Antonio Espinós has been vocal in criticizing the lack of transparency surrounding these exclusions and remains steadfast in advocating for karate’s reinstatement, emphasizing the sport’s global popularity, youth appeal, and commitment to gender parity.

The competition for inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics is fierce, with traditional and emerging sports vying for limited spots. The final program is expected to be confirmed after the Los Angeles 2028 Games, leaving karate’s fate uncertain. Nonetheless, the WKF’s proactive engagement with the Brisbane Organizing Committee reflects a strategic and hopeful endeavor to secure karate’s place in the 2032 Olympic program.

As the Brisbane Games approach, the global karate community remains optimistic that their concerted efforts will culminate in the sport’s celebrated return to the world’s most prestigious athletic stage.
