Rich Rodriguez’s Open Letter to West Virginia Mountaineers Football, Fans, and the Entire Mountaineer Community.
To the West Virginia Football Family, Mountaineer Fans, and the Entire WVU Community:
When I reflect on my football career, one place stands out above the rest: West Virginia University. Today, I’d like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the Mountaineer family for their unfailing support, passion, and love during my career, as well as for carrying on the legacy we created together.
West Virginia is more than simply a coaching location for me; it’s also my home. It is where I grew up, where my aspirations came true, and where I had the privilege of managing a program that means so much to so many people. Coaching at WVU was more than simply football; it was about family, pride, and a shared sense that we could achieve something extraordinary together. I will always treasure the memories of our on-field confrontations, the booming audiences at Milan Puskar Stadium, and the unwavering passion that distinguishes this program.
To the players I had the honour of coaching: you were the heart and soul of our success. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence enabled everything. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job has been seeing you grow not only as athletes, but also as leaders and men. You carried the torch with dignity and gave your all for the gold and blue. For this, I am eternally grateful.
To the fans: you are the lifeblood of West Virginia football. Your enthusiasm is unrivalled, your commitment is unshakeable, and your faith in the Mountaineers never wanes. Rain or shine, win or lose, you were by our side, and your enthusiasm powered every play, game, and season. Your passion for this team is genuinely unique, and it is what distinguishes West Virginia as one of the best college football programs in the country.
To the entire Mountaineer community, thank you for welcoming me, believing in our mission, and continuing to support our program with the same passion and dedication. West Virginia football is more than just one person; it’s a tradition, a way of life, and a bond that brings us all together.
Wherever life takes me, West Virginia will always be a part of who I am. The memories we made together will last a lifetime, and I will be eternally grateful for this fantastic experience.
Forever a mountaineer.
