To the Great Motorsport Family, Devoted Fans, and the Beloved Road Racing Community,
As I sit back and reflect on the remarkable adventure that has shaped my life, I am struck with gratitude and humility. From the screaming engines of Can-Am to the accuracy of Formula One and the enthusiasm of Trans-Am, every step of my career has been formed by the unflinching support and affection of individuals like you—fans, teams, competitors, and numerous unsung heroes in the motorsport industry.
Motorsport, to me, has never been about the checkered flag. It was about the connection. The electric energy of a crowd increases with each overtaking. Late-night garage work. The friendship of racers who, despite being adversaries on the track, became brothers and sisters in search of something more. You, the motorsport community, allowed me to grow, learn from mistakes, enjoy wins, and develop not only as a racer but also as a person.
I had no idea what to expect when I first got into a race car. The route was not always smooth. There were setbacks, mechanical problems, and even personal uncertainties. But in those quiet moments when the world seemed uncertain, your belief in me propelled me forward. To the fans who roared from grandstands across America and beyond—to those who patiently waited in pit lanes for a photo, an autograph, or simply a smile—please know that your enthusiasm drove me in ways I cannot express.
Thank you to the racing organizations, engineers, and crew members who worked relentlessly behind the scenes to provide me the opportunity to pursue speed and precision at the highest level. Your effort, sacrifice, and devotion made my accomplishments possible. And to my fellow drivers—both hard adversaries and wonderful friends—you brought out the best in me. We shared adrenaline, respect, and memories that will live on in the history of motorsports.
As I watch the next generation of racers take the wheel, I am filled with pride and hope. I see enthusiasm, creativity, and the same spark that started my career decades ago. The sport is in capable hands.
This letter is not a farewell, but rather a thank you. A thank you that spans decades, music, and memories. You gave a Californian youngster a dream and made it a legacy. That is something I will have with me always.
