Liam Everts’ injury in the MX2 class raises concerns.

In a troubling event for the motocross community, Liam Everts, a notable MX2 competitor, suffered a serious injury during the Grand Prix of China on September 15, 2024. Early in the second race, Everts crashed with teammate rider Lucas Coenen, resulting in a fractured fifth cervical vertebra.

After the crash, Everts received rapid medical assistance on the track before being transferred to a Shanghai hospital. Medical investigations verified the C5 vertebra fracture, requiring immediate surgical surgery. The surgery was carried out successfully at Huashan Hospital, a clinic known for its expertise in spinal injuries. According to post-operative reports, Everts began to regain sensation in his arms and legs, which was a good indication given the severity of his damage.

Everts’ injury prompted him to withdraw from the next Motocross of Nations (MXoN), where he was scheduled to represent Belgium. His absence led the Belgian national team to change their lineup accordingly.

Despite the setback, Everts remained resilient and determined. By November 2024, he had confirmed his move to Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing for the 2025 MX2 season, demonstrating his determination to return to competitive racing. This move also included getting a new race number, 26, which marked a new chapter in his career.

Everts’ injury emphasizes the inherent risks of motocross racing and the significance of strict safety precautions and timely medical attention. The motocross community continues to rally around Everts, offering encouragement as he works through his recovery and prepares to return to competition.
