An Epochal Open Letter from Coach Nicki Collen to the Baylor Bears
Hello, Baylor Bears fans, students, alumni, and the entire Waco community.
As I sit down to write this letter, my heart is filled with gratitude, pride, and a strong feeling of purpose. Today, as I sign a contract extension to continue leading this outstanding women’s basketball program, I feel compelled to express how much your unfailing love, support, and belief in me have meant during these unforgettable years.
When I initially came in Waco, I understood I was entering a program with a strong history and lofty aspirations. I didn’t come to replace anyone’s story; I came to construct a new one with all of you, one founded on togetherness, resilience, faith, and shared aspiration. Every day since, you’ve welcomed me not only as a coach, but also as a member of your family. And for that, I shall be eternally grateful.
This extension is more than just a contract; it is a commitment. A vow to keep creating something exceptional with these outstanding young women. A vow to encourage, mentor, and lead with integrity, compassion, and fearlessness. It’s a declaration that Baylor is home, and that our journey together is far from over.
Our devoted fans, who pack the Ferrell Center night after night, provide us with the fuel we need to keep going. You, our students who bleed green and gold, are the heartbeat of this university. Thank you for placing your trust in my leadership. And to the parents of our student-athletes, thank you for sharing your daughters with me and giving me the honor of shaping them as athletes and women.
There were offers. There have been some intriguing opportunities. However, as I have already stated and will continue to say, money is not everything. Legacy is. The impact is. Purpose is. And what we’re creating in Waco extends beyond victories and medals. It is about making a difference in people’s lives, empowering the next generation, and proudly representing Baylor University through excellence and faith.
This group has allowed me to develop not only as a coach, but also as a woman, mother, and Christian. You’ve given me the opportunity to lead truly and dream big. In return, I promise to give you my all – every game, practice, every moment.
The trip ahead will take everything we have, but we are prepared. Together, with your continuous belief and support, we will pursue greatness — not just banners, but a legacy of love, character, and championship spirit.
I really thank you, Baylor. I’m not finished yet.
In Faith and Family
Nicki Collen, Head Coach of Baylor Women’s Basketball.
