Grant McCasland’s epochal open letter to the Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball team, its supporters, and the whole Red Raider community
Greetings, Red Raider Family
I feel a great sense of pride and thankfulness when I pause to consider this amazing adventure. I write this letter from the bottom of my heart, not just as a head coach but also as a guy who has been profoundly changed by the Texas Tech Red Raiders community’s love, passion, and steadfast support. This is a dedication to all of you who have contributed to making this chapter of my life one to remember, not just a simple thank you.
I knew I was entering a program with a rich history, a strong culture, and an ardent fan base when I first got to Lubbock. However, nothing could have adequately prepared me for the love, dedication, and solidarity that permeate Red Raider Nation. You have welcomed me and my family like your own, from the thunderous excitement within United Supermarkets Arena to the sincere handshakes on campus. I will always be grateful for that.
Thank you to all of the players, both current and former, for having faith in me. We appreciate your dedication every day, both on and off the court, and your belief in our common goal. The most rewarding aspect of this journey has been seeing you develop as men, athletes, and scholars. Your ethics, work ethic, and unwavering will to persevere in the face of adversity have inspired me. It has been a privilege to walk alongside you, who are the program’s heart and soul.
To the fans: you have an unrivalled level of passion. Through every victory and setback, you have braved the cold, packed the arena, and remained vocal. You are the lifeblood that keeps this program going. Your voices reverberate in every play, every timeout, and every victory, whether it’s a weekday matchup or a postseason matchup. Not only are we aware of your support, but we all feel it profoundly.
I am grateful to the administration, coaching staff, and university leadership for enabling me to lead with honesty and purpose. This chance became more than just a job because of your faith in me. More than just a basketball program, we have created a family, a standard, and a future together.
Texas Tech, you provided me with an opportunity to develop both personally and professionally. You pushed me, encouraged me, and helped to mould me. My heart will always bear the memories we’ve shared, the struggles we’ve faced, and the connections we’ve formed.
Please know that I will always be a Red Raider, regardless of where this journey takes me. Your love, your battle, and your unwavering spirit will always be a part of me.
