An Open Letter by Gunnar Henderson to the Baltimore Orioles, MLB, and the Orioles Community
Dear Orioles family,
As I reflect on the great road I’ve been blessed to traverse, I’m overcome with thankfulness. Today, I’d like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the Baltimore Orioles organisation, Major League Baseball, and, most importantly, the dedicated fans and lively Orioles community who have backed me every step of the way. This is more than simply a thank you message; it is an homage to those of you who have influenced not just my career but also the man I have become.
When I was draughted by the Orioles, I was only a youngster with a dream and a glove, eager to establish my worth. What I wasn’t expecting was the family I’d discover here. From my first day in the minors to walking out onto Camden Yards in front of thousands of devoted fans, I’ve always felt as if I was a part of something much bigger than myself. And that feeling—being welcomed by this city and this team—means more to me than words can explain.
Thank you, Orioles front office, coaching staff, and development workers, for believing in and investing in me. You never sought to change me into someone I was not. Instead, you recognised my abilities, helped me overcome my flaws, and allowed me room to grow. You provided an environment in which I could learn, fail, and grow stronger. That kind of belief develops character, not just ballplayers.
My teammates, past and present, have been my brothers both on and off the pitch. You’ve pushed me, inspired me, and celebrated each triumph as if it were our first. I’ve learnt something from each of you, and it’s been an honour to wear this uniform among such wonderful men. What we’re creating here is unique, and I’m honoured to be on this journey with you.
To the fans: what can I say that can ever compare to what you’ve given me? You’ve been the lifeblood of my career. From waiting in the cold on Opening Day to shouting through extra innings in the summer heat, your enthusiasm has buoyed me when I needed it the most. You’ve donned my jersey, cheered my name, and reminded me why I love this game in the first place. Playing in front of you is an honour that I will never take for granted.
Thank you, Baltimore, for receiving a small-town youngster from Alabama with open arms. You have provided me with a home, a purpose, and a sense of community. Your enthusiasm for your team is contagious, and I feel it every time I walk down Pratt Street or hear the “O!” during the national anthem.
This is not our final goodbye. This is a thank-you. Thank you for every moment, lesson, cheer, and opportunity to be a part of something so special. I am still growing, learning, and grinding—and I will continue to do so every day for this team, this city, and all of you who believed in me before the world even knew my name.
With my whole heart,
Gunnar Henderson
