One of the oldest and most prestigious collegiate marching bands in the US is the Spartan Marching Band (SMB), which was established in 1870. The band, which has more than 300 members, is well-known for its energetic performances, exact formations, and the unique “kickstep” entrance routine, which is executed at a fast pace of 220 beats per minute. The SMB has a long history that includes appearances at five Rose Bowls, performances for five US presidents, and involvement in World’s Fairs and the World Series.
