Minneapolis, MN — In an extraordinary act of compassion and leadership, Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill Kaprizov has announced a landmark $78.6 million investment to address youth homelessness across the state of Minnesota. The project, titled “Kaprizov Cares,” will focus on transforming dozens of abandoned and dilapidated houses into safe, supportive shelters for vulnerable young people in need.
In a press conference near one of the future shelter sites in North Minneapolis, the 27-year-old forward, known for his electric performances on the ice, expressed his personal commitment to improving the lives of young people without stable housing. “As athletes, we’re given so much by the communities that support us,” Kaprizov said.
The shelters, which will begin construction later this year, will provide more than just housing. Each location will include mental health resources, career readiness programs, tutoring, and counseling services. The initiative will be run in partnership with local nonprofits including YouthLink, The Bridge for Youth, and Avenues for Youth.
According to the Minnesota Department of Human Services, more than 6,000 youth experience homelessness in the state annually — a number Kaprizov says is “unacceptable and fixable.” His project aims to make a lasting impact not only by providing shelter but by addressing the root causes of youth homelessness through community empowerment and long-term stability.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz applauded Kaprizov’s bold concept and generous gesture, describing it as “a shining example of what true leadership and empathy can accomplish.”
“This initiative could change the trajectory of thousands of young lives,” Walz told reporters. “Kirill Kaprizov isn’t just scoring goals for the Wild — he’s scoring wins for humanity.”
The first round of renovated properties is expected to open by early 2026, with more locations following shortly after. Each site will accommodate up to 30 youth and will feature staff trained in trauma-informed care and youth development.
