To the Michigan Wolverine family,
From the moment I stepped onto the field at The Big House, I felt the excitement of tradition, the pride of excellence, and the steadfast dedication to greatness that distinguishes the University of Michigan. Even as I transfer the torch and observe from a different perspective, I am still passionately attached to the maize and blue and the wonderful individuals who make this program more than simply football — a brotherhood, a standard, a way of life.
I am writing this letter not to say goodbye — since you never fully leave Michigan — but to reflect and look forward. This program has always been about more than winning and losing. It’s about turning young guys into professionals, not just on the football field, but in life. And to Coach Sherrone Moore, my former colleague, a genuine leader, and now the captain of the ship, I couldn’t be happier to see you take the helm. Your football mind is brilliant, your leadership is unquestionable, and your heart is firmly rooted in what Michigan stands for.
The next phase of Michigan football must revolve around “Playing Like Pros.” Not only are they fast, disciplined, and physically fit, but they also have a champion’s mindset. That entails investing in mental conditioning, nutrition, sleep science, and leadership training. It entails teaching athletes how to conduct themselves like professionals – with humility, attention, and accountability. It’s about creating a culture in which accountability is valued and excellence becomes a habit.
I’ve always thought that iron sharpens iron, and this is what we fostered at Ann Arbor. Competition in practice. Believe in your teammates. Believe in the process. These are the foundations that must be nurtured. Above all, love for the game and one another. When a player cares for his teammates, he plays harder. When a coach loves his players, he encourages them to be their best.
To the fans, alumni, and supporters: your enthusiasm drives this program. You’ve shown up in snow, rain, and sun. You’ve supported them through every setback, comeback, and milestone. Never underestimate how much this means to the young men who wear the winged helmet. They play for you, the university, and the legacy of those who have come before.
Michigan does not rebuild—we reload. And with Sherrone Moore at the helm, the future seems promising. I encourage you everyone to support him with the same enthusiasm as you did for me. Continue pushing the envelope. Keep developing better athletes. Continue to shape even great men.
