To the Ohio State Family:
When I think back on the great years I spent leading the Buckeyes, I am filled with pride and appreciation. The enthusiasm, devotion, and excellence that distinguish this university are unparalleled. From the moment I came onto campus, I realized this was a special place – a program steeped in heritage, skill, and a tireless ambition to excel.
Today, I’m writing to the coaches, players, and fans of Columbus, particularly Head Coach Ryan Day, to express my respect for the culture that is still flourishing there. Ryan, you’ve taken the reins with grace and grit, and you’ve built on the foundation with a vision that is still strongly aligned with the principles that make Ohio State great.
To the players donning scarlet and gray: you are a part of something far bigger than yourself. Every time you go onto the field, you carry the pride of a country of fans, the heritage of greats who came before you, and the duty to preserve a level of excellence. I want you to understand that being a Buckeye is more than just winning games; it is about becoming a professional in every sense of the word.
The phrase “play like a pro” refers to a mindset. It entails arriving early, being coachable, expecting more of yourself than anybody else could, and competing with unwavering grit. Beyond the game, it entails living with integrity, preparing for life after football, and representing this university with pride.
Athlete growth must extend beyond physical training. We must continue to invest in mental performance coaching, leadership development, and academic achievement initiatives. These are the pillars that form complete athletes — young men equipped not only for the NFL, but also for life’s most difficult fourth quarters.
I encourage the athletic department and the university to continue focusing on creative techniques such as sports science, NIL education, and personal development chances that will prepare these players to excel in all arenas. Because the world is watching, and our Buckeyes can set the standard.
And to the fans, the core of Buckeye Nation: never underestimate your influence. Your continuous support, presence in the Horseshoe, and belief in these young men feed the energy that propels Ohio State forward. You are a part of every play, victory, and breakthrough.
This curriculum is based on discipline, camaraderie, and excellence. Let us continue to lead college football in every manner, not just in terms of titles, but also in the quality of men we generate. Men who lead, give back, and are always prepared for the next challenge.
With pride, purpose, and an unwavering Buckeye belief,
Urban Meyer is the former head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, who won the 2014 National Championship.
