BYU Basketball Head Coach Kevin Young Signs Long-Term Contract Extension

BYU men’s basketball head coach Kevin Young has signed

a long-term contract extension following a stellar debut season in Provo. Hired in April 2024, Young made an immediate impact, leading the Cougars to a 26–10 record and their first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance since 2011. The 26 wins mark the program’s highest single-season total since 2016.

While the specific terms of the extension have not been disclosed, BYU athletic officials emphasized that the new deal is structured to keep Young in Provo “for the foreseeable future.” This extension comes just months after Young initially signed a seven-year, $30 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball.

Young previously served as the associate head coach of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and was considered a finalist for the Brooklyn Nets head coaching position before opting to take the BYU job. His NBA background has already had a clear influence on BYU’s style of play and national recruiting reach.

In expressing his excitement about the extension, Young thanked BYU leadership and fans for their support, stating, “BYU is a special place, and I’m committed to building a championship program while developing players ready for the NBA.”

Expectations for the Cougars continue to rise, especially with the addition of A.J. Dybantsa, the nation’s top high school recruit and a projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. BYU also boasts a nationally ranked recruiting class for 2025, currently sitting at No. 13 according to ESPN.

The contract extension signals BYU’s strong commitment to competing at the highest level in the Big 12 and on the national stage. With Kevin Young at the helm, the Cougars appear poised to become a consistent force in college basketball.
