Provo, Utah — June 6, 2025 The Brigham Young University (BYU) community was jolted today by the disclosure of distressing news about Cougars head football coach Kalani Sitake. Sitake, known as the steady hand and heart behind BYU’s football rebirth, has been a key contributor to the program’s recent success. As of this morning, BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe confirmed that Coach Sitake will step down indefinitely due to what has been termed as a “serious personal matter” requiring his immediate care.

The specifics of the problem have been kept confidential at the family’s request, but official comments from both the university and Sitake’s family say that this is a very personal matter unrelated to NCAA violations or football operations. Still, the decision sparked fear and confusion among BYU fans, alumni, players, and the larger collegiate football community.
“This is a heartbreaking moment,” Holmoe stated during a press conference Friday morning. “Kalani is more than just our head coach; he is family. Currently, he and his loved ones require time and space. Our prayers and complete support are with them.”
Players responded to the news with heartfelt social media tributes. Senior linebacker Ben Bywater tweeted, “Coach Sitake is the reason I am the man I am today.” I’m praying hard for you and your family, Coach. Cougar Nation has got your back.

Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki has been designated temporary head coach, starting immediately. While football operations will continue during the summer workouts and preseason camps, many refer to the entire program as being on “emotional standby.”
Fans and alumni have also begun to rally around Sitake, organizing vigils and support drives, as well as starting the #FightForKalani hashtag on social media, which has trended regionally across Utah. Coaches and programs from all throughout the Big 12 and beyond have expressed their support.
While there is no date for Sitake’s return, university authorities are confident that he will be welcomed back when he is ready. “Coach Sitake’s impact extends far beyond wins and defeats. He attends BYU. “And now it’s our turn to support him,” Holmoe remarked.
This unfolding story will continue to emerge, but what remains consistent is the Cougar family’s togetherness and strength in supporting the man who gave his all to elevate the program.
