Netflix to Debut “The Underdog,” a Documentary on WVU Legend Pat White
MORGANTOWN, WV – Netflix has announced the upcoming release of its newest original sports documentary, The Underdog, set to premiere on June 15, 2025. The film will spotlight the inspiring career of former West Virginia University (WVU) quarterback Pat White, whose journey from overlooked high school recruit to college football legend captivated Mountaineer fans and reshaped the program’s legacy.
Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Joel Stanton, The Underdog delves into White’s tenure at WVU from 2005 to 2008, where he became the first starting quarterback in NCAA history to win four bowl games. Known for his dual-threat ability, White set rushing records for quarterbacks in both the Big East Conference and the school’s history. He led WVU to major bowl victories, including the 2006 Sugar Bowl and 2008 Fiesta Bowl, helping establish the program as a national contender during one of its most successful eras.
The documentary features exclusive interviews with Pat White, former head coach Rich Rodriguez, teammates like Steve Slaton and Owen Schmitt, and national analysts who witnessed his rise. Rare game footage, personal anecdotes, and behind-the-scenes moments give viewers an in-depth look at White’s competitive spirit, leadership, and influence on modern college football. The film also explores his brief stint in the NFL and his legacy within the WVU community.
In a statement, White expressed his gratitude: “I’ve always carried West Virginia with me. This documentary is a chance to tell that story—not just mine, but the team’s, the state’s, and the fans’.”
To celebrate the release, Netflix will host a virtual premiere on June 15 featuring a live Q&A session with White, the director, and several surprise guests. Fans can register for the event through Netflix’s official social media channels.
The Underdog is part of a broader trend in sports storytelling, highlighting athletes who defied expectations. While separate from other upcoming WVU-focused documentaries—like those on Steve Slaton and Don Nehlen—this film stands out for its emotional depth and the cultural pride it evokes across Appalachia.
With its blend of nostalgia, grit, and inspiration, The Underdog promises to be essential viewing not only for WVU fans but for anyone who believes in perseverance, heart, and the power of being underestimated.
