The National Hockey League (NHL) has fined and publicly reprimanded Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos for statements he made following a game.

The NHL confirmed the penalty on Thursday, noting that Stamkos violated the league’s media policy and code of conduct with remarks that were deemed inappropriate and harmful to the sport’s reputation.

The incident emerged during Stamkos’ post-game interview on Tuesday, when he criticised both the refereeing and several opposing players, using language deemed derogatory by the NHL.

While the words were made in frustration following a difficult loss, the league believes they went beyond appropriate criticism and violated the standards required of its players in public situations.

“The comments made by Steven Stamkos were not reflective of the conduct we expect from our players, especially in a public forum,” stated NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell in a statement. “While we understand the passion and emotion that come with competition, such remarks are unacceptable and undermine the principles of respect that our league stands for.”

Stamkos, who is regarded for his leadership both on and off the ice, issued a follow-up statement expressing regret for his conduct. “I sincerely apologise to my teammates, the league, and our supporters for my statements. It was an emotional moment, and I did not intend to offend anyone. I accept the consequence and admonition, and I will endeavour to make sure this does not happen again.

The fine and public censure serve as a reminder to players about the significance of remaining professional on and off the rink. Stamkos will not face further disciplinary action unless he violates the rules again in the future.
