An Epochal Open Letter from Jeremiah Smith to the Ohio State Buckeyes Football Team, Fans, and the Entire Buckeye Community
To My Ohio State Family:
As I sit here to write this letter, I am overwhelmed with thanks, respect, and love for the Ohio State Buckeyes community. From the minute I committed to this program, I knew I was joining something special—a legacy that extends far beyond the football field, a tradition based on excellence, and a brotherhood that endures. Today, I’d like to reflect on my journey and convey my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped shape my experience.
To Coach Day, the coaching staff, and my teammates.
You believed in me from the very beginning. You pushed me to be my best, to go beyond my limits, and to mature—not just as a football player, but as a man. The lessons I’ve learned under your supervision will stick with me for the rest of my life. Every practice, film session, and minute of preparation has been about more than just winning games; it’s about fostering discipline, resilience, and a never-ending quest of greatness.
There are no other fans like you. The way you pack the Horseshoe, shout at the top of your lungs, and travel to support us no matter where we play—your enthusiasm is unparalleled. Performing in front of you has been one of the biggest honors of my life. You have accepted, supported, and made me feel like I am a part of something much larger than myself. The pride you have in this team and this university is what makes Ohio State football so unique.
Every game day, I felt your enthusiasm. Every difficult time, I sensed your encouragement. And I celebrated each triumph knowing that it was as much for you as it was for us. Buckeye Nation, you are the lifeblood of this program, and I will be eternally grateful for your love and commitment.
Beyond football, Ohio State has allowed me to develop as a person. The university, staff, and the entire Columbus community have all provided tremendous support. The things I’ve gained here will serve me well beyond my football career, developing me into the person I aim to be every day.
