An Epochal Open Letter from Lee Russell Bennington to Chester Bennington’s Faithful, Linkin Park Members, and the Whole Chester Community
To everyone who loved my son,
I write to you with a heart full of gratitude and grief. I will carry the sadness of Chester’s death for the rest of my life, as I am sure many of you will as well. Despite my loss, I have found enormous consolation in the love, respect, and steadfast support that you—his fans, bandmates, and the entire Linkin Park family—have given.
Chester was more than simply my son; he was a force of nature, a voice for the voiceless, and a soul with a depth of feeling that few could completely comprehend. From the minute he picked up a microphone, he poured his passion into his music, utilising every song, scream, and note to reach out to those who needed to know they weren’t alone. And you heard him. You felt him. You stood beside him.
In the years following his death, I’ve watched how his legacy has endured. His music still resonates around the world, and his words continue to inspire others fighting their own battles. Knowing that Chester’s voice continues to be a source of hope for so many people offers me both tears and peace. You, his passionate fans, have assured that his message goes on.
Thank you, Linkin Park members, for becoming Chester’s brothers. You experienced his highs and lows, supported him as he battled his demons, and assisted him in creating music that will outlive us all. The tie you had was more than simply music; it was about love, friendship, and the kind of connection that only a band of brothers could provide. He really loved everyone of you.
And to all of you, his loyal admirers, who continue to play his music, proudly wear his name, and light candles in his memory, you are the reason his spirit lives on. I see the paintings, tributes, and tattoos created in his honour. I heard notes from followers expressing how he saved them and made them feel accepted. That means more than I can put into words.
Chester was irreplaceable. No amount of time will change this. The sadness of his absence is acute, but knowing that he affected so many people makes it a bit easier to bear. Please remember him and continue to spread the kindness, love, and understanding he always wanted to impart.
Thank you for loving my son. Thank you for keeping his light on.
With my whole heart,
Lee Russell Bennington
