An Open Letter from Lindsey Vonn to the Alpine Skiing Community.
To my amazing fans, the ski community, and everyone who has been a part of my path,
As I think on my career, my heart swells with appreciation. This sport has given me everything—purpose, passion, and a family that spans icy mountains and continents. Today, I’d like to express my gratitude—not only as an athlete, but also as someone who has lived and breathed the beauty of skiing thanks to this great community’s unfailing support.
As a little girl, I felt the rush of freedom and the pull of something larger the moment I clipped into my skis. I had no idea where this road would lead me, but owing to the individuals who believed in me—coaches, teammates, competitors, and, most importantly, fans—I was able to pursue my aspirations with confidence. You encouraged me in my wins and supported me through my ailments, failures, and moments of doubt. That type of dedication is uncommon, and I will remember it forever.
To the Alpine Ski community—the organisers, administrators, and volunteers who work diligently behind the scenes—you provided a setting in which I could challenge myself and grow. You created the stage on which I experienced some of my most memorable moments, and I will always be in awe of your passion to the sport.
Thank you to my fellow athletes, past and present, for the challenges, friendships, and inspiration. Racing with you made me stronger, hungry, and determined. Whether we were fighting for gold or simply carving turns under the same sky, we had something special: a passion for the mountains and the excitement of the descent.
And to the fans—the heart and soul of our sport—you were out in the cold, waving flags, yelling my name, and inspiring me. Your encouragement helped me when I needed it the most. Every race, every podium, every fall and rise—I took your spirit with me.
Though my competitive skiing days are behind me, my passion for the sport will never wane. I will continue to give back, inspire the next generation, and celebrate all that makes Alpine skiing special.
