In a commanding performance, sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson led No. 23 Kansas State to a 42-20 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma State on September 28, 2024, in Manhattan, Kansas. Johnson accounted for five total touchdowns—three through the air and two on the ground—propelling the Wildcats to a decisive win and improving their record to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play.

Johnson’s stat line was impressive: completing 19 of 31 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns, alongside 60 rushing yards and two scores on five carries. Despite an early interception, he maintained composure and led the Wildcats to 35 unanswered points after trailing early in the game. His performance earned him multiple accolades, including Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, a spot on the Davey O’Brien Great 8 List, and recognition as a Manning Award Star of the Week.

Head coach Chris Klieman praised Johnson’s poise and development, noting his exceptional practice performance leading up to the game. Klieman highlighted Johnson’s accuracy and confidence, stating, “On Thursday, he may have been like 32-of-35. I grabbed him on Friday morning and said, ‘That’s as on-point as I’ve seen you in a practice.’ It was really good throws in tight windows.”

Running back DJ Giddens complemented Johnson’s efforts with a stellar performance of his own, rushing for 187 yards and a touchdown, including a pivotal 66-yard run early in the second half that extended Kansas State’s lead to 28-13. Giddens also contributed a 22-yard reception, showcasing his versatility and impact on the game.

Oklahoma State’s offense, led by quarterback Alan Bowman, managed 361 passing yards and a touchdown. However, Bowman’s two interceptions and a lost fumble proved costly. Wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling was a bright spot for the Cowboys, recording seven catches for 157 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown reception on a flea flicker play.

Defensively, Kansas State’s unit, known as “The Mob,” demonstrated resilience by limiting Oklahoma State to just seven points after the first quarter. Safety Marques Sigle, who secured an interception during the game, emphasized the defense’s tenacity, stating, “We’re called Mob for a reason. When we go to war, we’re looking to win. Our motto this year is, ‘We’re in a fight.’ You’re either going to take the punch or you’re going to keep punching. That’s what we did. We kept punching.”

Looking ahead, Kansas State will have a bye week before traveling to face Colorado on October 12. Oklahoma State, now 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play, will aim to rebound as they host West Virginia on October 5.
