In a historic transatlantic cooperation, NBC and the BBC have confirmed the premiere date of a highly anticipated documentary about the life and legacy of legendary Canadian poet, singer-songwriter, and novelist Leonard Cohen. The in-depth film “Leonard Cohen: Hallelujah and Beyond” will premiere worldwide on November 15, 2025, broadcasting simultaneously on BBC Two in the United Kingdom and Peacock in the United States.

This riveting documentary promises to be the most thorough investigation of Cohen’s fascinating life to date, including his early years in Montreal, his emergence as a literary figure and folk star in the 1960s, his spiritual explorations, and his late-career resurgence, which enthralled generations once more. The film, which includes never-before-seen archival footage, handwritten lyrics, private letters, and rare interviews with relatives, collaborators, and fellow artists, seeks to debunk myths and reveal the man behind the music.

“Leonard Cohen: Hallelujah and Beyond,” directed by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?), takes audiences on a poetic journey through the personal and political, holy and profane—all themes that distinguished Cohen’s art and life. Judy Collins, Sharon Robinson, Rufus Wainwright, Bob Dylan, and Cohen’s family members all contribute to the documentary, delivering highly personal comments on his legacy and enduring mystique.

“This documentary isn’t just a tribute—it’s an invitation to understand the soul behind the songs,” explained Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer. “Leonard Cohen’s art went beyond boundaries, genres, and generations. We are happy to convey his tale in all of its depth and complexity.”

Jonathan Feldman, NBCUniversal’s EVP of Global Content, adding, “Cohen’s music—especially masterpieces like ‘Suzanne,’ ‘Bird on the Wire,’ and ‘Hallelujah’—has left an indelible mark on world culture.” With this film, we hope to give spectators an intimate look at how those timeless words and melodies came to be, as well as the man who gracefully carried both hardships and joys.

The documentary also discusses Cohen’s period as a Zen monk, his struggle with depression, and the sorrow of financial betrayal, which led to one of the most triumphant comebacks in music history.

“Leonard Cohen: Hallelujah and Beyond” aims to be both a tribute and a revelation, giving fans old and new the opportunity to walk alongside one of the most profound voices of the twentieth century.
