The American Library Association (ALA) recently designated a book written by University of New England associate professor Ryan Williams, Ph.D., as one of the most notable reference volumes released in 2024.

The book, “The U.S. Criminal Justice System: A Reference Handbook,” has been named to the 2025 Outstanding Reference Sources List. The yearly list, compiled by professionals from the Collection Development and Evaluation Section of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a branch of the American Library Association, highlights exceptional reference resources that are strongly recommended for inclusion in public and academic library collections.

Williams’ book, co-authored with Sarah Koon-Magnin, Ph.D., and published by Bloomsbury, offers an authoritative overview of the American criminal justice system. The extensive resource delves into the system’s historical, legal, and philosophical basis, as well as the various facets of racial and economic inequality. The book, one of ten publications chosen nationally for this year’s list, provides insights into daily life in the country’s complex court and penal systems.

“I’m honoured that we were recognised by the ALA,” said Williams, an assistant professor of criminology and sociology at UNE’s School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. “This recognition is not just about our book but about elevating crucial conversations about justice, equity, and systemic change.”

The reference manual includes profiles of key figures in criminal justice and social activity, as well as primary documents, recommendations for additional reading, and a full timeline. It seeks to investigate the origins and growth of America’s criminal justice system, focussing on the moral ideals and legal theories that have impacted the country’s laws and prisons, as well as current issues, debates, and reforms.

Michael Burman, Ph.D., director of the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, stated that the award not only demonstrates the book’s significant contributions to the national discourse on criminal justice, but also how impressive it is for Williams to receive such recognition so early in his career.

“We are so pleased, but not surprised, by this recognition of Dr. Williams’ work,” Burman told the audience. “We were thrilled to have him join the criminology faculty this year because of his extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system in the United States and his ability to convey it with our students. Ryan’s work exemplifies the quality and relevance of the social scientific studies performed at UNE.”
