BREAKING NEWS: Former Texas A&M Head Coach Jackie Sherrill Sends Message to Mike Elko

COLLEGE STATION, TX — In a show of unity and respect across

generations of Texas A&M football leadership, former Aggies head coach Jackie Sherrill has sent a message of encouragement to current head coach Mike Elko as he enters a pivotal chapter in the program’s history.

Sherrill, who coached at Texas A&M from 1982 to 1988 and led the Aggies to three consecutive Southwest Conference titles, also had a stint at Washington State earlier in his career. Known for his tough, disciplined approach and program-building mentality, Sherrill remains a respected voice within the college football world. His outreach to Elko was described as both personal and symbolic — a gesture from one program leader to another.

In his message, Sherrill reportedly commended Elko’s early efforts in reestablishing the Aggies’ competitive edge and highlighted the unique challenges and expectations that come with leading the Texas A&M program.

“Mike has stepped into a role that comes with immense pressure, but also great potential,” Sherrill stated. “At Texas A&M, you’re not just coaching a team — you’re leading a tradition. I’ve been there. I know what it takes. He’s got the tools and the vision to do something special.”

Elko, who took over the program following the 2023 season, has already made headlines for his no-nonsense leadership and defensive-minded approach. His efforts to reignite the Aggie spirit have drawn attention from alumni, fans, and now, one of the most successful coaches in A&M history.

Sherrill’s message reportedly also offered Elko an open line of communication, saying, “If you ever need to talk ball or just want to hear a story or two from the old days, I’m just a call away.”

The connection between Sherrill and Elko highlights the continuity of culture and expectations at Texas A&M — where the pressure to win is matched only by the pride in its legacy.

With the 2025 season on the horizon, the Aggie faithful will be watching closely as Elko writes the next chapter of A&M football — now with a nod of approval from one of the legends who helped shape it.
