Colorado’s Makar Wins Norris Trophy as NHL’s Top Defenseman for Second Time in Four Seasons
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar has once again solidified his place among the NHL’s elite, capturing the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman for the second time in four seasons. The 26-year-old blueliner, known for his dynamic skating, elite vision, and offensive prowess, previously won the award in the 2021–22 season.
This year, Makar led all defensemen with 92 points (22 goals, 70 assists) in just 75 games, continuing to redefine what it means to be a modern NHL defenseman. His ability to control the pace of play, both in the offensive zone and on the back end, made him a constant threat and a cornerstone of Colorado’s system.
“I’m incredibly honored to win this award again,” Makar said during the awards ceremony. “There are so many talented defensemen in the league, and to be recognized among them means a lot. But honestly, individual awards are a reflection of team success, and I wouldn’t be here without my teammates.”
Drafted fourth overall in 2017, Makar has quickly become one of the most impactful players in the NHL. In addition to his Norris Trophies, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy and helped the Avalanche capture the Stanley Cup in 2022, cementing his reputation as a game-changing force from the blue line.
Makar edged out finalists Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks and Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators, both of whom had exceptional seasons in their own right. However, Makar’s blend of offensive output, defensive responsibility, and ice time against top competition gave him the edge in the voting.
Coaches and analysts continue to praise Makar for his composure, intelligence, and ability to adapt in high-pressure moments. “He’s one of those rare players who makes the extraordinary look routine,” Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said. “He’s a true leader and a special talent.”
