In a heartfelt open letter, former Arkansas Razorbacks star running back Darren McFadden has shared his personal journey with alcohol addiction and his path to recovery. McFadden, who retired from the NFL in 2017 after a decade-long career with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys, opened up about his struggles in an interview with KARK in May 2024.

McFadden revealed that his battle with alcohol intensified following his retirement. “Being home, not having a lot to do, trying to figure out what to do next and nothing else was there. Alcohol was always there everywhere you turn,” he shared. Recognizing the toll it was taking on his life and family, he sought help through an intensive outpatient treatment program. As of May 18, 2024, McFadden celebrated one year of sobriety.

Reflecting on his journey, McFadden expressed a newfound sense of happiness. “I was in the kitchen just the other day and I told my wife, ‘I just feel happy right now. I’ve drunk so much during my life I never thought how it would feel without drinking and I just feel super happy right now,'” he recounted.

Now, McFadden is dedicated to helping others facing similar challenges. “I’ve been an alcoholic. I know what it is. I know the hurt it causes you and your family,” he said. “If I can just tell somebody and bring them along and get them off of their boat that’s one of my main goals.”

McFadden’s openness about his struggles and commitment to aiding others serve as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of seeking help and the possibility of recovery.
