BREAKING NEWS: Michigan Wolverines Rising Star Junior Nsemba Invests $7.5 Million to Transform House Into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Detroit
Detroit, MI — May 7, 2025
In an inspiring display of leadership off the field, Michigan Wolverines rising star linebacker Junior Nsemba has announced a $7.5 million investment to convert a historic Detroit property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The 21-year-old standout, known for his dominant performances on the football field and his growing popularity among college football fans, revealed plans Tuesday morning to launch the Next Play Youth Center, a 20-bed facility that will offer shelter, meals, mental health support, and educational programming to at-risk teens and young adults in the city.
“This is more than football. This is about making sure every kid has a chance at a future,” Nsemba said at a press conference held at the project site on Detroit’s east side. “I grew up with people who didn’t have that chance, and I’m in a position now to change that story for others.”
The shelter, set to open in early 2026, will also include a mentorship program led by former athletes and educators, a tech lab funded by private donors, and a community garden. Local officials praised the project as a “game-changer” for Detroit’s youth.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan commended Nsemba’s commitment: “Junior Nsemba is showing what true leadership looks like. He’s using his platform and success to directly impact the lives of vulnerable young people in our community.”
Nsemba, a junior at the University of Michigan, has become a household name in college football, recently earning All-Big Ten honors and appearing on early NFL draft boards. Despite his athletic success, he has emphasized that giving back has always been a top priority.
“It’s easy to focus on the lights and the headlines,” he said. “But I never want to forget where I came from. This is just the beginning.”
Construction on the Next Play Youth Center is expected to begin in July.
