Morgantown, West Virginia. The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball program has achieved a huge victory as the NCAA granted immediate eligibility waivers to guards Jasper Floyd and Honor Huff following a successful appeal. The decision comes as a huge relief to head coach Darian DeVries and the WVU basketball community, as it ensures the dynamic duo will return to the court in 2025-26.

The waiver ruling comes after months of ambiguity over Floyd and Huff’s eligibility status, as both transferred to WVU under unusual circumstances. Initially deemed ineligible for the following season due to transfer restrictions and timing issues, the players and the institution filed a formal appeal with the NCAA, citing personal, academic, and athletic factors, which has now been successful.

“This is a day of celebration for our program,” said Head Coach DeVries in a press release. “Jasper and Honor are not just fantastic athletes, but also exceptional young men who have put their hearts into this program. They have handled the situation with patience, maturity, and professionalism. We are really proud of them and delighted to have them eligible and prepared to compete for West Virginia in 2025-26.”

Jasper Floyd, a dynamic 6’2″ guard known for his unrelenting defensive intensity and rapid decision-making, transferred from UNC Wilmington with the goal of having an instant impact in Morgantown. His plea mentioned academic success, commitment to community outreach, and personal development as factors for prompt consideration. Floyd impressed during offseason workouts and is expected to take on a leadership role for the Mountaineers next season.

Honor Huff, a sharpshooting junior who came to WVU as a graduate transfer from Virginia Military Institute (VMI), made a compelling case based on his academic and athletic achievements. Huff, known for his long range and clutch shooting, offers a seasoned presence and championship mindset to a team looking to climb the Big 12 rankings.

The Mountaineers’ appeal was supported by multiple character references, academic transcripts, and mental health evidence, all of which the NCAA reviewed throughout its review process. Finally, the governing body decided in favor of fairness, player welfare, and the “best interests of the student-athletes.”

WVU Director of Athletics Wren Baker also praised the decision, underlining its significance for the team and the larger Mountaineer community.

“This is more than a win on paper,” Baker stated. “This decision embodies the virtues we cherish at West Virginia: tenacity, resilience, and integrity. We thank the NCAA for providing Jasper and Honor the opportunity they deserve.”

The official return of Floyd and Huff has raised hopes for the Mountaineers’ 2025-26 season substantially. The squad, which has undergone a rebuilding period in recent years, now has a deeper backcourt, veteran leadership, and renewed optimism for the future.

Fans in Morgantown are ecstatic that two important parts of the puzzle have been reassembled. As Jasper Floyd stated on social media shortly after the announcement: “We remained the course. Let’s finish this mission. Let’s go, mountaineers.”
