The NCAA and Southeastern Conference (SEC) have fined and publicly reprimanded South Carolina Gamecocks forward Chloe Kitts for her post-game statements questioning refereeing. The disciplinary move comes after Kitts expressed dissatisfaction with the referees’ decisions in a recent SEC game, which she claimed had a negative impact on the outcome.
Following South Carolina’s narrow loss to a conference foe, Kitts spoke openly in a press conference, challenging the consistency of calls throughout the game. “We play hard every game, but it’s tough when calls aren’t going both ways,” Kitts said. “All we ask for is fairness, and sometimes it feels like we’re not getting that.”
Her words received immediate notice from the NCAA and SEC, both of which have severe prohibitions against public criticism of officials. South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley also spoke on the subject, supporting Kitts while respecting the league’s decision. “Chloe is a fierce competitor who speaks from the heart,” she stated. “We encourage our players’ efforts to advocate for fairness, but we also recognize the need of adhering to NCAA and SEC requirements. Moving forward, we will continue to work through the appropriate channels to address issues.
