BREAKING NEWS: Spencer Carbery Named Head Coach of Washington Capitals, Aiming to Inject Fresh Energy and Direction into the Franchise

Washington, D.C. – April 15, 2025

In a bold and strategic move aimed at rejuvenating the Washington Capitals, the organization has officially announced the hiring of Spencer Carbery as their new head coach. General Manager Brian MacLellan confirmed the news early Tuesday, stating the franchise is excited to begin a new chapter under Carbery’s leadership.

“The hiring of Carbery is seen as a strategic move to inject new energy and direction into the Capitals’ organization,” MacLellan said during a press conference held at Capital One Arena. “He understands the identity of this team and brings with him a track record of success at every level of the game.”

Carbery, 43, replaces veteran coach Peter Laviolette, whose tenure with the team ended on April 14 after three seasons. The decision to part ways with Laviolette comes amid the team’s struggle to maintain consistent playoff performances and aging roster challenges. The move signals a turning point, focusing on the development of younger players and reviving the Capitals’ competitive edge.

Spencer Carbery is no stranger to the Capitals organization. He previously served as the head coach of the Hershey Bears, the Capitals’ AHL affiliate, from 2018 to 2021. During his tenure, he guided the team to an impressive 104-50-9-8 record and was named AHL Coach of the Year in 2021. His ability to nurture talent and foster a winning culture made him a standout candidate.

Carbery most recently worked as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2021 to 2023. In Toronto, he oversaw the power play unit, which ranked first in the NHL during the 2021–22 season and second the following year. His offensive acumen and analytical approach earned him widespread recognition across the league.

“This is a full-circle moment for me,” Carbery said during his introductory remarks. “To return to Washington in this role is a tremendous honor. I’m excited to work with the players, the front office, and the fans to bring a new vision to life.”

Insiders describe the hiring as a culture-shifting decision. Carbery’s reputation for player development, communication, and tactical innovation is expected to align with the Capitals’ evolving needs. With a blend of established stars like Alex Ovechkin and emerging prospects from the AHL system, Carbery is tasked with managing a transitional period while keeping the team competitive.

“Spencer has that unique ability to connect with veterans and rookies alike,” said Capitals assistant GM Ross Mahoney. “He understands modern hockey and brings a balance of discipline, creativity, and vision. We believe he’s the right fit at the right time.”

The Capitals’ fanbase, while nostalgic about the Laviolette era, has responded positively to the announcement. Social media lit up with excitement as news broke, with many praising the franchise for embracing a future-focused approach.

Carbery will begin team meetings and offseason planning immediately, with training camp set to open later this summer. All eyes will be on Washington as a new era officially begins.
