BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Badgers Star John Tonje Invests $7.9 Million to Build Shelters for Homeless Youth
Madison, WI – In an inspiring act of generosity, Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball rising star John Tonje has announced a groundbreaking $7.9 million investment aimed at transforming vacant homes into safe, supportive shelters for homeless youth across Wisconsin.
The 22-year-old athlete, known for his leadership both on and off the court, shared the news during a press conference Friday morning. “I’ve been blessed with opportunities through basketball,” Tonje said. “Now it’s my turn to give back and make sure young people in tough situations have a place to call home.”
The initiative, titled “Homes for Hope,” will focus on renovating abandoned or neglected properties in urban areas, turning them into fully furnished shelters with access to counseling, education support, and job training resources. The first phase of the project is set to launch in Madison and Milwaukee, with plans to expand statewide.
Community leaders and advocates have praised Tonje’s efforts. “This is a game-changer,” said Maria Lopez, director of Madison Youth Services. “To have someone of John’s stature step up and invest in our young people’s futures sends a powerful message of hope.”
Tonje, who transferred to Wisconsin last year and quickly became one of the team’s standout players, said the project was inspired by his own experiences volunteering at youth centers growing up. “I’ve seen firsthand how a safe space can change a kid’s life,” he explained. “Every young person deserves that chance.”
Construction on the first shelter is expected to begin this summer, with doors opening by early next year. Tonje’s foundation will partner with local nonprofits to provide ongoing support and programming for residents.
As Tonje prepares for what could be a breakout season with the Badgers, his impact is already being felt far beyond the basketball court. “At the end of the day,” he said, “it’s not just about points or wins — it’s about making a difference.”
