In a momentous announcement that has sent shockwaves through the Buffalo Sabres hockey community and beyond, legendary defenceman Owen Power has been officially declared the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres.

In a momentous announcement that has sent shockwaves through the Buffalo Sabres community and the broader NHL world, Owen Power has been officially named the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres. The decision marks a defining moment in the franchise’s history, as the 22-year-old becomes one of the youngest captains in team history and one of the youngest in the league today.

Power, selected first overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, has rapidly developed into the backbone of the Sabres’ defensive unit. With his towering 6-foot-6 frame, smooth skating, and elite hockey IQ, Power has been a model of consistency on the ice. But it’s his character off the ice that ultimately convinced management and coaching staff he was ready to wear the “C.”

“This wasn’t just about talent,” said Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams. “Owen embodies the identity we want for this team—humble, hardworking, and driven. He leads by example, and the guys rally around him.”

In just over two seasons, Power has already shown a maturity well beyond his years. He’s logged heavy minutes, taken on top-pairing duties, and handled the pressures of a passionate hockey market with poise. His leadership in the locker room has been evident to teammates and coaches alike.

Head coach Don Granato echoed those sentiments. “Owen has earned the respect of everyone in that room—not through words, but through his commitment. He’s the kind of player who shows up every night, does the work, and makes everyone around him better.”

The announcement was met with a standing ovation at the team’s morning skate, where Power addressed his teammates with a short but heartfelt speech. “This means the world to me,” he said. “I grew up dreaming of moments like this, and I’m honored to be trusted with this responsibility.”

As the Sabres aim to return to playoff contention for the first time in over a decade, Power’s appointment symbolizes a new chapter in Buffalo. With a young core and renewed direction, the team is poised to make noise—and it will be Owen Power leading the charge, both on and off the ice.
