LUBBOCK, TX — April 8, 2025

Texas Tech University and the entire college football community are mourning the loss of a beloved figure. Eddie Biedenbach, the legendary football coach who led the Red Raiders for over a decade, passed away at the age of 79.

Biedenbach, known for his steadfast leadership, tactical acumen, and deep commitment to student-athletes, became a cornerstone of Texas Tech football during his tenure from 1979 to 1991. His legacy goes far beyond the wins and losses; he was a mentor, an advocate, and a passionate advocate for the game.

Throughout his coaching career, Biedenbach helped transform the Red Raiders into a formidable force in the Southwestern Conference. Under his guidance, Texas Tech achieved multiple bowl game appearances, and his influence extended beyond the gridiron, shaping the lives of countless players who went on to achieve great success both in sports and beyond.

“Coach Biedenbach was not only a great football coach, but he was a man of integrity, character, and heart,” said Texas Tech Athletics Director, Greg Byrne. “He loved his players like family, and he was deeply invested in their lives both on and off the field. His impact on this program is immeasurable, and we will forever be grateful for his contributions to Texas Tech football.”

Biedenbach’s commitment to excellence was apparent in every season he coached. His ability to build winning teams was paired with an unwavering focus on the importance of academics and personal development for his athletes. Former players remember Biedenbach as someone who demanded discipline and excellence but always had their best interests at heart.

Biedenbach’s leadership and mentorship left an indelible mark on Texas Tech’s football program, and many former players have expressed their sorrow and shared memories of the coach who influenced their careers.

“Coach Biedenbach was more than a coach; he was a father figure to many of us,” said former Red Raider quarterback, Jamie Reynolds. “He taught us how to be men, how to be strong both physically and mentally, and to always strive for greatness. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance.”

Though his time as the head coach ended in 1991, Biedenbach’s contributions to Texas Tech football continued to resonate long after his departure from the sidelines. The university will honor him with a moment of silence at an upcoming football game and plans to dedicate a section of the stadium in his name, ensuring his legacy is preserved for future generations.

Eddie Biedenbach leaves behind his wife, two children, and a lasting imprint on the lives of all who had the privilege of working with him.
