An Epochal Open Letter from Center Connor Bedard to the Chicago Blackhawks, Fans, and the Whole Blackhawks Community
Dear Chicago Blackhawks family,
As I sit with a heart full of appreciation and meditation, I find myself in a peculiar situation in which words seem both important and inadequate. But here I am, doing my best to articulate what this organization, city, and community have meant to me.
The moment I was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, I knew my life was going to alter forever. What I didn’t comprehend at the time was the depth of the Blackhawks family’s love, support, and belief. You accepted me not only as a player, but as one of your own – a young child with enormous goals and an even bigger heart for the game. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
Thank you to the Blackhawks’ supporters, who are passionate, devoted, and just electric. Thank you for packed the United Center night after night, rain or shine, win or lose, and trusting in me since my first shift. You cheered me on when I scored, encouraged me when I struggled, and always made me feel like I belonged in this wonderful city. Chicago not only supports its athletes, but it also lifts them, and I’ve felt it every time I’ve stepped onto the ice.
To my teammates, both past and present, you have been my combat brothers. I entered this league with a lot to learn, and you took me under your wing. You’ve pushed, challenged, and guided me to become not only a better athlete, but also a better person. I’ll never forget the closeness we’ve formed in the locker room. Thank you for supporting me through every shift, injury, win, and loss.
Thank you to the coaching staff, management, and everyone behind the scenes for your tireless efforts to foster an environment of quality and support. Everyone, from the trainers to the team chefs, contributes to this adventure. Your confidence in my abilities and ongoing mentoring have allowed me to improve in ways I never believed possible. You laid the groundwork for my future and helped to shape it.
And, Chicago, you are more than simply a home. You are the heartbeat, spirit, and driving force behind my endeavor. I’ve strolled your streets, enjoyed your winters, and shared your enthusiasm for this amazing game. There is no location in the world where I would rather wear a jersey.
I may still be in the early stages of my profession, but I am confident that these years, events, and memories will last a lifetime. I commit to continue giving my all to this team, this city, and the game that has given me so much. Because the Chicago Blackhawks offered me more than just a chance; they gave me a dream.
