An Epochal Open Letter from JuJu Watkins to the USC Trojans, Fans, and the Whole Trojan Community
Dear USC Trojans Family, Fans, Coaches, Teammates, and the Whole Trojan Community,
As I sit down to write this letter, my heart is flooded with profound appreciation and emotion. Reflecting on the great trip I’ve been fortunate to share with you all, I’m reminded that no success—no triumph, no growth—occurs in isolation. It takes a community. And what a strong, supportive, and inspiring community I’ve found in you.
From the time I decided to wear the cardinal and gold, you greeted me with open arms, unflinching faith, and a devotion that could withstand any storm. It didn’t take long for me to realize that USC was more than just a university; it was home. It was a place where a young girl with tremendous goals might mature into a lady with even greater purpose. You trusted in me when I was just starting out, and you never let go of that belief.
To my teammates: you are my sisters, anchors, and motivators. We have sweated, laughed, sobbed, and fought together. We accomplished everything together, from practice to game to comeback. You’ve helped me become more than just a player; you’ve made me a better leader and person. I am eternally grateful for the bond we share, which will outlive any scoreboard or victory banner.
Thank you to Coach Lindsay Gottlieb and the entire coaching team for challenging me, believing in me, and assisting me in being the athlete I had always envisioned myself to be. You saw more in me than I did in myself at times, and your faith sustained me through periods of uncertainty and suffering. Your dedication to greatness, consistent mentorship, and passion for the game have defined who I am on and off the court.
To the fans: wow. You never failed to come up for me. Whether it was filling the Galen Center, sending encouraging words online, or wearing USC clothing in the stands, your enthusiasm instilled in me a passion that I carried into every game. You reminded me why this game is greater than myself. You helped make every shot and win unforgettable.
And to the entire USC community, thank you for fostering an environment that empowered me, not just as a basketball player, but also as a woman with a voice, vision, and purpose. You’ve given me a platform to inspire, lead, and be authentically me. That is a gift that I will cherish throughout my life.
This is not a farewell; it is a celebration. Thank you. A vow that the ideals you instilled in me would continue to guide my journey, no matter where it leads.
With love and thanks,
JuJu Watkins,
USC Women’s Basketball Guard 🏀💫.
