An Epochal Open Letter from Garrett Greene to the West Virginia Mountaineers Football Team, Fans, and the Entire WVU Community
Dear Mountaineer family,
As I reflect on this remarkable trip, my heart is filled with gratitude, pride, and love. It’s difficult to express what the West Virginia University community has meant to me—not just as a quarterback, but as a person. The years I spent in Morgantown were transformative, filled with memories that will last a lifetime.
From the start, you welcomed me into the great heritage of Mountaineer football with open arms and unwavering support. Wearing the gold and blue was more than simply a game; it symbolized a tradition of toughness, grit, and unity. Every time I took the field at Milan Puskar Stadium, I wasn’t simply playing for myself. I played for the people of West Virginia, every fan in the stadium, every young athlete watching from home, and the generations of Mountaineers who poured their hearts and souls into our program.
Thank you for believing in me, pushing me, and guiding my development both on and off the field. You recognized promise in me even when I was still learning, and you cultivated it with care and purpose. You challenged me to lead, take responsibility, and exemplify West Virginia football’s standards. For that, I am eternally grateful.
To my teammates—my brothers—it has been an honor to share the locker room, huddle, and battlefield with you. We’ve celebrated victories, battled defeats, and become stronger with each experience. The kinship we share goes well beyond football. You are family to me, and I will carry our memories wherever life takes me.
To the fans, who are the lifeblood of our program, you have provided gasoline for our fire. Your cries resounding over the mountains, your pride on full display every Saturday, your unflinching support in us regardless of the outcome—you’ve encouraged me to give my all, every single snap. I will never forget the fire, passion, and love you have shown me.
And to the entire WVU community, thank you for turning me into the guy I am now. Your support stretched beyond the field, into schools, neighborhood streets, and countless more everyday situations. You provided an environment in which I could grow, lead, learn, and dream greater than I had ever dreamed.
This letter is not a goodbye. It’s a love letter, a celebration, and a commitment. I will always be a mountaineer at heart. Wherever life takes me next, I will take this jersey, this community, and this pride with me.
With profound respect and heartfelt gratitude,
Garrett Greene
