Dear Mountaineer family, There are times in life when words alone cannot fully express the weight of appreciation in one’s heart—but I shall do my best today. As I think on my personal and professional life, I am drawn back to Morgantown, Milan Puskar Stadium, and the sea of gold and blue that filled my heart with pride, purpose, and a strong sense of belonging every Saturday.
West Virginia University provided me more than just a career; it gave me a calling. Coaching the Mountaineers was more than just winning and losing; it was about creating a program that valued tenacity, resilience, and the unbreakable link of community. From the moment I arrived into campus, I realized I was a part of something bigger. You, the fans, welcomed me back—not just as a coach, but as one of your own. And for that, I shall be eternally thankful.
Together, we created something unique. I remember the raucous cheers, the late-night practices, the heartbreaks that changed us, and the victories that brought us together. We did more than simply play football; we created memories, formed identities, and proudly carried West Virginia’s pride on our backs. Seeing our players develop into not only amazing athletes, but also men of character and strength, was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
The unwavering, furious, and real support, however, stood out the most. Mountaineer Nation, you are unparalleled. You stood with us whether we flew or tripped, in the sun or in the snow. Your loyalty became the foundation for our momentum. Your enthusiasm drove every locker room speech, halftime adjustment, and fourth-quarter push.
Thank you to all of the players, past and present, for believing in me, challenging me, and letting me be a part of your story. Coaching you was more than just a responsibility; it was a blessing that I will never forget. Thank you to the staff and administration for fostering an environment conducive to vision and devotion. Thank you, students and alumni, for being WVU’s heartbeat—your spirit rang in every shout and radiated through every handshake.
Life has led me to new stadiums and sidelines, but Morgantown has always held a special place in my heart. The lessons I gained, the friendships I formed, and the love I received from this great community have all helped to shape the man and coach I am today. As I compose this letter, my thoughts are not on the past or regrets, but rather on reverence. I value the time we had, the legacy we left, and the trip we took together. I will always be pleased to have been a part of West Virginia football. And, no matter where my life takes me, I will always support the Mountaineers.
