Sydney, Australia β In a remarkable act of generosity, Penrith Panthers star halfback Nathan Cleary has announced a $7.5 million investment to convert his private residence into a shelter for homeless youth in Western Sydney.
Cleary, 27, widely regarded as one of the NRLβs brightest talents, unveiled the project earlier today at a press conference alongside local community leaders and Penrith Panthers officials. The initiative aims to provide housing, support services, and educational opportunities for young people facing homelessness across the region.
βIβve been fortunate to have incredible support throughout my life and career,β Cleary said. βI want to give back to the community thatβs given me so much. Every young person deserves a safe place to stay and a chance to rebuild their lives.β
The shelter, set to open in early 2026, will accommodate up to 40 residents at a time, offering not only a roof over their heads but also access to counseling, job training, and mentorship programs.
Penrith Mayor Todd Carney praised Clearyβs contribution, calling it βa powerful example of leadership and compassion.β βNathan isnβt just a champion on the fieldβheβs proving to be a champion for the community as well,β Carney said.
The project will be managed in partnership with Mission Australia and other local non-profit organizations, ensuring wraparound care for residents.
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo also commended Clearyβs initiative, adding, βThis is exactly the kind of impact we hope to see from our players. Nathan is setting the standard for how athletes can use their platform for good.β
Cleary confirmed that he will continue playing for the Panthers while overseeing the development of the shelter. βRugby league will always be my passion,β he said. βBut I know I have a responsibility beyond the game.β
Construction is expected to begin this July, with the facility named βThe Cleary Houseβ in honor of his familyβs legacy in Western Sydney.
