Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton has expressed satisfaction with Oneil Cruz’s defensive performance following his transition from shortstop to center field during the latter part of the 2024 season. This strategic move was implemented as the team’s playoff aspirations diminished, allowing Cruz to adapt to his new role over the final month.

Shelton highlighted the importance of making the position change during the season to provide Cruz with substantial major league experience in center field, rather than relying solely on offseason drills or winter ball. The decision was driven by Cruz’s exceptional athleticism, which the team believed would be well-suited to the expansive outfield at PNC Park. Shelton noted that Cruz made several impressive plays that appeared effortless, underscoring his natural aptitude for the position.

Statistically, Cruz’s defensive metrics improved markedly after the switch. In his 23 games as a center fielder, he committed only two errors, a significant improvement compared to the 24 errors in 112 games at shortstop earlier in the season. Advanced fielding metrics also reflected this positive trend, with Cruz recording a +2 Outs Above Average (OAA) and a +1 Fielding Run Value (FRV) in center field, compared to a -3 OAA and -2 FRV at shortstop.

Overall, the Pirates’ decision to reposition Cruz appears to have bolstered their outfield defense, with Shelton and the coaching staff optimistic about his continued development in center field.
