Yankees Reassign Top Outfield Prospect to Minor League Camp

March 13, 2025

The New York Yankees have announced the reassignment of Estevan Florial, their top outfield prospect, to minor league camp. This decision indicates that Florial will begin the 2025 season in the minors, continuing his development before potentially rejoining the major league roster later in the year.

Estevan Florial’s Journey

Estevan Florial, 27, has been a prominent figure in the Yankees’ farm system for several years. He made his major league debut in 2020 and has since had multiple stints with the team. In 2023, Florial made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster but was designated for assignment shortly after. He cleared waivers and spent the majority of the season with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, where he showcased his potential by batting .284 with 28 home runs and 79 RBIs over 101 games. His performance earned him a late-season call-up, during which he appeared in 19 games for the Yankees.

Recent Transactions

In December 2023, the Yankees traded Florial to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for pitcher Cody Morris. During his tenure with the Guardians in 2024, Florial played in 36 games, posting a .173 batting average with three home runs and 11 RBIs. He was designated for assignment in May 2024 and subsequently sent to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. Following the season, Florial elected free agency on October 21.

Return to the Yankees

On December 10, 2024, Florial signed a minor league contract with the Yankees, marking his return to the organization where he began his professional career. His reassignment to minor league camp suggests that the Yankees are keen on providing him with consistent playing time to refine his skills and regain his form.

Implications for the Yankees

The Yankees’ decision to reassign Florial reflects their depth in the outfield and a commitment to ensuring that their prospects receive ample opportunities for development. Florial’s performance in the minors will be closely monitored, as his potential to contribute at the major league level remains significant.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Yankees continue to evaluate their roster, balancing the integration of seasoned veterans with the nurturing of emerging talent like Estevan Florial.
