Danielle Green, a former Texas A&M Aggies women’s basketball player, Iraq War veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, was honored with the renowned Pat Tillman Award for Service at this year’s ESPY Awards. The award, named after the late NFL star and US Army Ranger Pat Tillman, honors people who demonstrate dedication, leadership, and courage in the face of adversity—qualities Danielle Green exemplifies in all aspects of her life.

Prior to defending her country on the war, Green established herself as a fierce and tenacious Aggie opponent on the basketball floor. Her dedication, discipline, and leadership skills were evident during her playing career, and they carried over into her duty in the United States Army. Green was stationed in Iraq as a military police officer in 2004, but her term was cut short when she was seriously wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade strike, resulting in the loss of her left arm.

Danielle refused to let the terrible injury define her. She was awarded the Purple Heart for her bravery and sacrifice, and when she returned home, she began a new mission of healing, advocacy, and service to others.

Green currently works as a Veterans Service Coordinator for the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she helps numerous veterans navigate life after the service. Drawing on her own physical and emotional trauma, she offers advice, support, and therapy to veterans dealing with reintegration, disability, and mental health issues. Her work not only empowers other veterans, but also motivates civilians and service members to face adversity with strength and purpose.

In her emotional acceptance speech at the ESPYs, Green thanked her family, fellow warriors, and the Texas A&M community. “I’ve worn many uniforms in my life,” she told me, “but the most meaningful thing I do now is fight for those who’ve worn one too.” The Pat Tillman Award for Service recognizes people who continue to lead, inspire, and uplift even after the conflict has ended. Danielle Green is an excellent example of such a life. Her narrative is one of steadfast determination, compassion, and genuine dedication to others. She is more than just a hero; she is a source of hope.
