Danielle Green, a former Michigan State Spartans women’s basketball player, Iraq War veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, has been honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2025 ESPY Awards, causing a deep wave of joy in East Lansing. The award, named after NFL star and fallen U.S. Army Ranger Pat Tillman, honors people who embody service, strength, integrity, and perseverance—qualities that Danielle Green has demonstrated throughout her extraordinary life.
Green’s rise to prominence began on the floor in East Lansing, where she proudly sported the green and white as a determined Spartan competitor. Danielle won the respect of her teammates and coaches for her tenacious defense, team-first attitude, and unwavering hard work. However, the skills she developed on the court would eventually benefit her in ways no one could have predicted.
Following her college experience, Green accepted a deeper urge to serve her country by enlisting in the United States Army. In 2004, while serving as a military police officer in Baghdad, Iraq, she was seriously injured when a rocket-propelled grenade attacked her unit. The blast claimed her dominant left arm and ended her military career, but it did not take her spirit.
Green received the Purple Heart, one of the nation’s highest military decorations, for her valiant actions in combat. But instead of allowing suffering to define her, she opted to transform. She returned to the United States, earned a master’s degree in counseling and psychology, and embarked on the next chapter of her life, dedicated to healing and inspiring others.
Danielle Green currently works as a Veteran Outreach Coordinator for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, where she advocates for veterans dealing with PTSD, disability, and the transition to civilian life. Drawing on her own life experience, she is a beacon of empathy, courage, and resilience for the veteran community. Her effect is both national and extremely personal; she meets veterans where they are and helps them through healing and hope.
Green’s impassioned acceptance speech at the ESPY Awards captivated the audience. “I’ve lived through loss, but I’ve gained a greater purpose,” she stated. “Basketball taught me discipline.” The military taught me to sacrifice. And now I apply all I’ve learned to help those who have served.”
In response to the news, Michigan State University issued a sincere statement. “Danielle Green represents the very best of what it means to be a Spartan—strength, character, and a commitment to others,” said Athletic Director Alan Haller. Fans, former teammates, and alumni celebrated her on social media with hashtags such as #ForeverSpartan and #GreenStrong.
The Pat Tillman Award for Service is more than just a medal; it honors a life dedicated improving others. Danielle Green’s journey has taken her from Michigan State’s courts to Iraq’s war zones and the front lines of veteran care.
Congratulations, Danielle—you are forever a Spartan and a hero.
