Alabama Crimson Tide Under Scrutiny Following NCAA Sanctions on Georgia and Auburn By ABC News Staff April 20, 2025 In the wake of recent NCAA sanctions imposed on fellow Southeastern Conference (SEC) programs Georgia and Auburn, attention has turned to the University of Alabama’s athletic department. While the Crimson Tide has not faced major infractions in recent years, previous incidents and ongoing vigilance by the NCAA have placed the program under scrutiny.
In 2024, the NCAA penalised Alabama’s baseball program for violations by former head coach Brad Bohannon. Bohannon provided insider information to an individual betting on an Alabama baseball game, violating NCAA wagering and ethical conduct rules. The program received three years of probation and a $5,000 fine.
In addition, from July 1, 2023 to June 28, 2024, the University of Alabama self-reported 11 Level 3 NCAA violations across multiple sports. These minor offences occurred in sports such as swimming, basketball, and gymnastics. Notably, the football program reported no breaches during this time.
Despite these concerns, the Crimson Tide football team, led by head coach Kalen DeBoer, has remained focused on compliance and integrity. The university has allowed unparalleled access to its football operations for a new docuseries called “The Tides That Bind,” which aims to highlight transparency and the program’s inner workings.
As the NCAA continues to enforce regulations and monitor athletic programs, Alabama’s proactive actions and dedication to compliance may operate as a deterrent to prospective punishments. However, the increased scrutiny following the penalties imposed on Georgia and Auburn emphasises the significance of continued monitoring and adherence to NCAA regulations.
