The film, which is set for release in the summer of 2026, will follow the remarkable life, career, and legacy of Tony Gwynn, the renowned outfielder for the San Diego Padres whose name has come to represent reliability, style, and unadulterated hitting prowess.

The Netflix special, which is directed by the renowned sports documentarian Ezra Edelman, who is best known for his Oscar-winning O.J.: Made in America, promises to immerse viewers in the thoughts of a man who permanently altered baseball. Rare video from Gwynn’s 20-season Padres career and in-depth interviews with former teammates, coaches, and rivals, as well as heartfelt statements from his family, will all be included in the documentary. Baseball greats including Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, Cal Ripken Jr., and Barry Bonds will be making appearances to honor the player, whom they call “a master of the art of hitting.”

Known as “Mr. Padre,” Gwynn played with the San Diego Padres his whole career, winning eight batting titles in the National League, being selected to 15 All-Star teams, and having one of the highest lifetime hitting averages in modern baseball history (.338). He was a hero for his honesty and passion for the game and a legend for his unmatched ability to read pitchers, modify his swing, and make contact.

Gwynn’s life outside of baseball is also highlighted in the Netflix documentary, in addition to his achievements on the field. He committed himself to coaching at San Diego State University after retiring in 2001, teaching young players with the same accuracy and patience that characterized his career. His leadership and upbeat attitude had a long-lasting effect on the entire San Diego community, not just baseball.

The film will also go into Gwynn’s valiant fight against cancer, which exposed his genuine resilience and personality. Emotional moments of fortitude, faith, and the eternal strength of his spirit are shared by family members and close friends.
