East Lansing, Michigan — Michigan State University has officially announced plans to retire the jersey of one of its most iconic figures, Earvin “Magic” Johnson. The choice to recognize Magic in this historic way represents not just his amazing contributions on the court, but also the significant impact he has had on Michigan State, basketball, and society as a whole.

The ceremony, which will take place at the Breslin Center during a major Big Ten game later this season, promises to be an emotional and memorable event. Magic Johnson’s renowned No. 33 jersey will be elevated to the rafters, where it will forever represent excellence, inspiration, and Spartan pride.

Magic’s ties to Michigan State are extensive. Johnson, a Lansing native, elected to stay close to home when he committed to Michigan State University, commencing a college career that would change basketball history. During his stint with the Spartans, he led the team to the 1979 NCAA National Championship, when his game-winning performance against Larry Bird and Indiana State became legendary. That victory not only gave Michigan State its first national championship in men’s basketball, but it also sparked one of sports history’s greatest rivalries and friendships.

Magic wowed fans in East Lansing for two seasons with his unrivaled court vision, passing brilliance, and contagious zeal. He reimagined what it meant to be a point guard, blending size, speed, and talent in ways the game had never seen. Beyond the stats and honors, Magic exemplified what it meant to be a Spartan: a tough competitor with a team-first mindset and a desire to lift those around him.

Michigan State University Athletic Director Alan Haller discussed the significance of the jersey retirement.

“Magic Johnson is more than just a basketball legend; he represents the very best of what Michigan State stands for — integrity, leadership, and service,” Haller tweeted. “Retiring his jersey is a way for us to say thank you for all he has given to this university, on and off the court.”

Magic’s contributions did not stop when he left for the NBA. Throughout his life, he has been a passionate MSU ambassador, sponsoring scholarships, community activities, and athletic programs. His ongoing involvement and generosity have improved numerous lives in the Spartan community and beyond.

Magic regards the accolade as extremely personal.

“Michigan State will always be home,” Johnson declared in a statement. “The memories, friendships, and experiences I had here helped shape who I am today.” “I am humbled and grateful for this incredible honor.”

As the countdown to what will undoubtedly be a night of celebration and reflection begins, Spartans all over are prepared to pay tribute to one of their own — a legend whose jersey will now hang in the rafters as a permanent reminder of what it means to be Magic.
