Nathan MacKinnon’s Epochal Open Letter to the Colorado Avalanche, Fans, and the Entire Avalanche Community
To the Colorado Avalanche organization, amazing fans, and the whole Avalanche community,
Every athlete’s life comes to a point where reflection takes over—and today, I’m writing with a full heart, not just as your teammate and center, but also as someone whose life has been permanently transformed by the love, loyalty, and support of this incredible family.
When I initially arrived in Colorado as a wide-eyed adolescent, selected into this legendary franchise, I couldn’t have imagined what was ahead. I knew right away that I had arrived in a place that seemed familiar. A location that required the best of me while also providing me with every opportunity to become not only the player I aspired to be, but the man I was born to be.
Thank you, Avalanche organization. Thank you for believing in me, investing in me, and providing me the opportunity and responsibility to develop. From the front desk to the training staff, each of you has contributed to my development. You have pushed, encouraged, and surrounded me with a culture that values excellence, resilience, and heart.
My teammates—past and present—are my brothers. The camaraderie we’ve built on and off the ice is unique and priceless. We’ve fought through injuries, enjoyed successes, suffered losses, and supported one another in the trenches. Our Stanley Cup run was more than simply a triumph; it was the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and belief. I am happy to wear the “A” not only for “Avalanche,” but for accountability, ambition, and, most importantly, gratitude.
And to the supporters, Avalanche Nation, you are this team’s soul. From the sea of burgundy and blue that fills Ball Arena to the roars that resound throughout Denver and beyond, your enthusiasm motivates us. You’ve supported us through the highs and lows, the rebuilding years, and the glory days. I’ll never forget those electrifying playoff games, the thrill of bringing the Cup back to Colorado, and seeing your faces light up with pride. You made every minute worthwhile.
This letter is not a goodbye, but rather a heartfelt thank you. It’s an understanding that this trip has never been my own. We’ve created something special together—something that goes beyond the scoreboard. You’ve given me a sense of purpose and strength, as well as my own community.
Keep chasing your dreams on skates and sticks, youngsters. You are never alone. To every Avalanche fan who has ever cheered my name, please know that I hear you and take that sound with me every time I lace up.
