Nikola Jokić wrote an open letter to the Denver Nuggets, fans, and the community.
To my loving Denver Nuggets family:
As I sit down to write this letter, my heart is overflowing with gratitude, reflection, and love for a truly incredible trip. When I arrived in Denver as a young kid from Sombor, Serbia, I had no idea what an unbelievable adventure awaited me. Yet here we are, years later, with numerous memories and a bond greater than I can ever convey.
Thank you, Denver Nuggets, for believing in me when few others did. Drafting a youngster during a Taco Bell ad in the second round may not appear to be a franchise-altering moment, but it was the beginning of a dream for me. You offered me more than just a jersey; you gave me a platform, a family, and a sense of purpose. You helped me grow as a player and as a man. You allowed me to be myself — modest, humble, and unusual — and demonstrated that excellence does not require shouting.
My teammates, past and present, are my brothers. We’ve created something beautiful together: a culture of unity, trust, and joy in the game. Sharing the floor with you has taught me more than I could have learned alone. Together, we’ve laughed, fought, triumphed, and developed. Whether it was lifting the championship trophy or sweating out a tough road win in February, every time with you has been invaluable.
To the fans, yes, the fans—you are the lifeblood of this voyage. From Ball Arena to every house around the world where Nuggets fans live and breathe the game, your encouragement has been the wind beneath my wings. I’ve felt your applause, faith, and belief, particularly during difficult moments. Your love has never wavered, and it has fueled me more than you would ever realize. Thank you for yelling my name, wearing my jersey, and making Denver a city where basketball is more than just a game; it’s a lifestyle.
Thank you to the whole Nuggets community and the city of Denver for accepting me, my family, and my story. You’ve shown me what it means to belong. You’ve celebrated my highs and supported me in my lows. You’ve given me a home away from home, and I’ll take the spirit of this city with me wherever I travel.
This is not a goodbye letter; it is a love letter. A celebration of how far we’ve gone and a tribute to the grandeur that lies ahead. We’ve demonstrated that loyalty, hard effort, and belief can lead you all the way to the top.
