Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde has shared unexpected news regarding outfielder Heston Kjerstad. Kjerstad, who had been making significant contributions since his activation, was recently placed on the 7-day concussion injured list. This decision came after Kjerstad was struck in the helmet by a 96.8 mph pitch from New York Yankees closer Clay Holmes during a game on Friday night. Initially, Kjerstad appeared to be recovering well and was slated to play in the subsequent game. However, during pregame warmups, he experienced a resurgence of concussion symptoms, leading to his placement on the injured list. In response to the incident, tensions escalated between the Orioles and the Yankees, resulting in benches clearing and heated exchanges. Hyde expressed his frustration, particularly with the reaction from the Yankees’ dugout, stating, “My guy got hit in the head, and I might have said some things that, at the time, I reacted to it.” Kjerstad’s absence is a significant blow to the Orioles, as he had been one of the team’s most productive hitters since his recall from Triple-A Norfolk on June 24. In his 14 games, he posted a .378 batting average with three home runs and 12 RBIs. The team has called up outfielder Kyle Stowers to fill the roster spot during Kjerstad’s recovery. The Orioles and Yankees are now tied atop the American League East, adding further intensity to their upcoming matchups.
